Social Media Campaign Brief
_________________________________________________________________________________
For another module during my semester of work, I had to plan and run a social media campaign on a social medium of my choosing. The campaign had to have a purpose in addition to original content posted regularly. Before starting my campaign, we had 6 weeks of planning out our campaigns. First I created two basic plans...
Plan 1: Young Business Owners
_________________________________________________________________________________
One of these target audiences could be young business owners between the ages of 21 and 30 in the London area. Any gender. These would be people who know little about the design process themselves however can appreciate good design. They would not be able to afford a whole department within the company or to hire a whole agency to complete the task therefore they would ask me to design their website/create their brand.
Aspirations:
They have a fear of not being taken seriously for work in their specific markets based on the initial brand that they portray. They want to be recognised by other businesses online for their creative and innovative presence and to be taken seriously by their competitors even though they would be a relatively young business. Motivated by a mixture of the above, to be competitive and given the chance to prove themselves in their respective markets.
Social Media Channels used by this Audience: Linkedin, Facebook or Google Plus
Social Media Campaign Idea:
The basic idea for this social media campaign would be to show the development of a side project from initial design stages all the way through until production/publication. This would be done for example with the re-design of my own portfolio website over a 5 week period. I would start with showing initial sketches, brainstorming and research. Then moving into development and design using various pieces of software I know like Sublime Text 2, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
The campaign would be based primarily on Facebook as this would be where each day I would update my progress in addition to holding Q&A sessions once a week. These would be so that anyone following the progress of development can ask me how I would do certain things.
Creating:
The content that I would create for this campaign would be a simple three page website. The bulk of the campaign would be documenting the process of designing/developing a site in addition to showing the final product. Examples would be the brainstorming/wireframing of the site, research into existing sites of a similar purpose ect.
Every other day, I would include a photograph on what I am doing. So across the 5 week project there would be a total of 17/18 photographs that could be viewed showing the development of the project. Between this time, I would attempt to tweet at least 3 times a day at a minimum and a maximum of 10 times a day. This is to ensure that my online presence would always be felt by my followers without overloading them with information.
Curating:
The curating sections of the social media campaign would be that I would link the users to blogs of people who have different methods of designing a product. In addition to this, I would link useful websites and articles such as CodePen, Cody House and CSS-Tricks ect. to show how I find different pieces of development code.
SMART:
Specific:
I would want to gain part-time freelance employment from any new companies in the London area that would want to develop an online presence/brand. I would want to be known for creative, interesting work that doesn’t come across too formal however maintaining a level of professionalism.
Measurable:
One way that I could simply measure how well this social media campaign progresses would be by the amount of work that would come through from clients. In addition to this, if Facebook was to be the used social media channel it could be tracked with how many likes the page would have combined with how many interactions (i.e comments, photograph likes, personal messages) would be seen on/from the page.
Agreed:
The agreed goal for this project would be to gain part-time/freelance employment.
Realistic:
An objective of this campaign would be to have my own brand of work become recognisable and trusted by a small group of existing businesses. This would be so that by potential word-of-mouth and networking, my brand would become known to then. Therefore leading towards future employment from these companies.
Time-bound:
The main campaign would run through the End of Year show until the end of the Semester, hopefully allowing me to gain work opportunities for the summer and third year NLT projects.
Plan 2: Young People wanting to get into the Digital Media Industry
________________________________________________________________________________
Young people between the ages of 10 and 20 in the UK rather than a specific area. Any gender. These people would be in education however looking for something outside of that to develop their own designing skills. People who would want to learn more about how to be more creative with their presentation of work both physically and digitally. No extra cost like places such as treehouse.com or books. Just opinions and tips from someone going into that industry.
Aspirations:
A fear that they have is that they may not have the skills they need to get into the industry in addition to that normal education would not be enough to get them their first job/internship/place at university. An aspiration is that they want to go into the digital media or any creative industry as a career. A motivation of this audience could be that they are creative in their spare time through either illustration, coding or music and want to be able to develop themselves in the real world.
Social Media Channels used by this Audience: Youtube, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram
Social Media Campaign Idea:
The idea for this campaign would be to encourage young people to become more creative outside of their set educational studies. This would be mainly focused around teaching them how to be more innovative with a sketchbook/portfolio. This idea came from when I was around 13 years old when I had to start thinking about my future so I created a Youtube channel as a side-project.
I feel that younger people need to do more than just be in education to be a step-ahead on the competition for a job in the creative industry. The plan would be to include images and photographs through Twitter and Instagram every other day. So once every two days I would post an image then between I would tweet about links to be creative and my own opinions on good porfolios/sketchbooks.
The main social media outlet for this campaign would be Twitter as my main target audience of young people would be on this medium. In addition to this, using Twitter rather than another social media is more effective for direct audience participation/interactions. It will allow me to reply directly to questions and then broadcast those questions in the form of a retweet.
Creating:
For this campaign, the creative assets would be photographs of a sketchbook/portfolio and how these would make the users own sketchbooks/portfolios more engaging in an interview situation. Alongside this, there would be some instructions on how to create these pages. Giving my own opinions on certain methods of design/sketches would be included in the tweets I post online.
My tweets would consist of my opinions on designs and articles available online such as from The Verge. Giving the users various methods to get into the design industry and think about where to find out the latest things in the design world. Also I would have a huge push on user-interaction, maybe asking my users what they think of a certain portfolio or article. Creating a buzz within the community so that they can spread themselves to their friends.
Over the 5 Week project, once every two days I would post a photograph of a different sketchbook page. This would come to around 17/18 sketchbook pages. In addition to this, every Sunday during the campaign I could host a Q&A (question and answer) session. This would encourage audience interaction due to the nature of Twitter being heavily based on direct contact. Each Week I would like to see a steady growth of 30 followers a week to reach the goal of 150 followers. Measuring of this statistic would be done on Sunday evening to gage a proper number.
Curating:
There are many ways of curating content for this project for example including links from blogs that talk about their own sketchbooks. Also including hyperlinks for creative online portfolio websites that could be taken as inspiration by the target audience. In addition to this, I would include once a week a question and answer sessions (starting in Week 2, Sunday) so my audience could ask me questions about what I do. Doing this would help my brand expand beyond a few people in addition to gaining the potential of growing recognition.
Content Management:
In order to manage the regularity of content through the social media channel, I would have to start developing content a few
SMART:
Specific:
From this campaign, I would like to build myself a brand that would be recognisable to potential employers and clients. I am doing this because having a degree isn’t enough to gain a job therefore building experience and allowing others to gain experience at the same time is more for-filling. The aim would be to develop a creative way for showcasing my work in a series of tasks over the 5 weeks. Every two days, I would create a page within my sketchbook so show development in an innovative way. The aim of the campaign is to get others involved with new ways to become creative.
Measurable:
The way that I could measure this would be through either likes on Instagram photographs in addition to followers on Twitter. Another method of measuring the success of the campaign is to see how many people interact with each tweet (retweets/favourite/replies) and work an average from those stats. My objective would be to reach at least 150 followers by the end of the 5 week period.
Agreed:
The agreed goal would be to get younger people into being creative in the area of the digital media industry outside of their mainstream education. In addition to this, I would allow people to help build a portfolio through a sketchbook in innovative and creative methods.
Realistic:
One objective would be to develop my own brand through the social media stream so that people would recognise my work which would potentially lead to future employment. Having a strong recognisable brand could have a impact when competing against other people for a job position.
Time-bound:
The time restrictions on each section would be that I would like to achieve at least 150 different followers across both social mediums (Twitter and Instagram). I say different because some people may want to follow both accounts however I would like individual people. The plan would be to develop a sketchbook that would show the users how to creatively showcase their work.
Final Social Media Campaign Plan
_________________________________________________________________________________
Name of the company:
Cresswell Design
Social Media name:
Twitter
@Cress_Design
Instagram
@Cresswell_Design
Starting Followers (Twitter): 0
Starting Followers (Instagram): 0
What do you offer?
An individual way of completing a task with my own personal brand. A personal touch rather than a corporate approach. The way I design things is heavily involved with physical mediums for development of my own ideas. These are such as a sketchbook and pencil rather than heading straight for the computer.
What are the Values?
“From sketchbook to screen…” could be a potential tagline/slogan for my work as all of my designs begin on paper. I would want to be perceived by the end consumers as a creative, honest, unique and fun yet formal designer.
Target Audience Research:
Young people between the ages of 10 and 20 in the UK rather than a specific area. Any gender. These people would be in education however looking for something outside of that to develop their own designing skills. People who would want to learn more about how to be more creative with their presentation of work both physically and digitally. No extra cost like places such as treehouse.com or books.
Potential Audience Fears:
A fear that they have is that they may not have the skills they need to get into the industry in addition to that normal education would not be enough to get them their first job/internship/place at university. A motivation of this audience could be that they are creative in their spare time through either illustration, coding or music and want to be able to develop themselves in the real world.
Competitors:
@Stephen_Byrne96
Stephen Byrne
The reason this person would be considered a competitor is because he regularly uploads content that he has created himself. Something I want the campaign I am running to do.
@landor_dot_com
Landor Associates
A design agency that tweets a lot of content that I intend to do. Such as links to articles, designs they are currently working on and retweeting relevant/recent information.
@Form_design
Form Design
Another design agency that does the same as the Landor Associates however they do have a more personal and friendly tone. This is another thing that I want to take for my own campaign/account.
Proposed Social Media Channels:
Youtube, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram
Chosen Social Media Channels:
Twitter and Instagram
The reason why these channels would be best suited to the target audience is because this is where a majority of young people are. With Twitter having 560 million active users and Instagram having 150 million; it makes sense to use them. In addition to this, they both use Hashtags that can be linked with a specific brand or theme. These can be incorporated into developing real-time events for the company.
Business Objectives:
Obtain a total of 150 individual followers across Instagram and Twitter by the end of the campaign
Get young designers involved with the industry from a young age
Drive more people towards my portfolio of work
Obtain a high engagement rating per-tweet/like
Social Media Campaign Idea:
The idea for this campaign would be to encourage young people to become more creative outside of their set educational studies. This would be mainly focused around teaching them how to be more innovative with a sketchbook/portfolio. There will be a regular flow of content with an equal balance of created and curated content.
Once every two days I would post an image of a sketchbook page for them to work on. Then between I would tweet about links to be creative and my own opinions on good portfolios/sketchbooks. The main social media outlet for this campaign would be Twitter as my main target audience of young people would be on this medium. In addition to this, it will allow me to reply directly to questions and then broadcast those questions in the form of a retweet.
Content
Creating:
For this campaign, the creative assets would be photographs of a sketchbook/portfolio and how these would make the users own sketchbooks/portfolios more engaging for use in an interview situation. Giving my own opinions on certain methods of design/sketches would be included in the tweets. They would also include links to online articles from places such as The Verge. Giving the users various methods to get into the design industry. Also there would be a huge push on user-interaction, maybe asking the users what they think of a certain portfolio/article.
In addition to this, there will be a Q&A sessions each week on a Sunday where anyone can ask me questions about things I have done during the week as well as other questions. This would encourage audience interaction due to the nature of Twitter being heavily based on direct contact.
For certain days of the week, there would be a small design brief I would set for example using a specific hashtag. For example, a brief could be to redesign a specific logo. I would set it on the Monday then people would tweet me their responses on Friday with the hashtag #FeedbackFriday and I would respond to them.
Over the 5 Week project, once every two days I would post a photograph of a different sketchbook page. This would come to around 17/18 sketchbook pages. Between these photographs, I would also upload images of projects I have currently been working on. Each Week I would like to see a steady growth of 30 followers a week to reach the goal of 150 followers. Measuring of this statistic would be done on Sunday evening to gage a proper number.
Measuring Success:
The way that I can measure the success of my social media campaign would be to measure many different things. The first of these would be the followers I gain per-week in order to meet my 150 individual followers goal I have set myself. This can easily be done my checking how many followers I have gained in one week and making a note of that.
Another method of measuring success would be to create a chart of how many interactions I have had with users within the week, showing whether to not the content I am creating is getting me noticed. This can be done by looking through all of the notifications for each account then taking away followings. This means I would be left with Retweets, Mentions, Favourites, Likes and Comments.
The third and final method of measuring success would be to use Google analytics in my website in addition to tracking the entry points to my design blog through Blogger. These can show me how many users have entered my blog/website and where they have entered from. Doing this should allow me to learn where my main audience of users are finding my content from. Being so specific with this data will show me whether the viewers are coming via Twitter or Instagram.
Content Creation Process
_________________________________________________________________________________
First of all, my campaign needed a logo. I decided to start sketching some of them up in my sketchbook. I wanted something simple with some text over it as it would be difficult to create a unique icon for it. I focused on around the slogan for my campaign which was "From Sketchbook to Screen" which is why a lot of my illustrations contain a pencil. All of them are within an eclipse as I wanted something contained and that could be placed anywhere or on anything.
I then took all of the illustrations I had done by hand and re-created them using Adobe Illustrator. In addition to this, I created new ones on the computer as creating an asset once means you can duplicate it. This allowed me to create multiple variations of the same logo very quickly. I decided to use the same colour scheme as I do both on my Blog and my Portfolio website. In addition to this, the font I have used for the text is very similar as well.
I decided to go with the top right logo in the collage and I took away the inside fill to just have the outlines. This is so that it would give the impression of being hand drawn. I placed the slogan underneath the logo and centred the whole design. This was taken from a screenshot of the animation I created of it. To view that animation please visit this link...
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYIft0Eoj1s.
In addition to creating the logo I wanted to create a banner that would be used on the social media channels i'd choose to use. I did this by taking another one of my illustrations into Adobe Illustrator and going around them with the Pen tool. I could have used the Live Trace tool to perform this act however I feel that the Pen tool would be more accurate and produce a better result.
After creating my Logo and my banner, I had to find out the size of the pictures for my two social mediums I wanted to use. After I decided on choosing Instagram and Twitter, I sketched out some designs for what the banner could be including the sized of them. For example, the banner for Twitter is 1500px x 500px. The Profile picture of Twitter is 400px x 400px and for Instagram is 161px by 161px.
After designing the banner, I had to crop it down to the size I wanted. This was the result of that banner being created. It was created to be the right size from a sketch I did a while ago. The design further builds upon the brand of sketched artwork being taken onto the screen. I felt that the illustration should be kept black and white so that all of the details could be seen.
This is the banner and logo in place on my Twitter page, showing that all the designs work in practice. The logo was changed slightly to an off-white colour in order to make it more distinguished from the background.
This is the logo in its place on my Instagram account. The logo is exactly the same as it was on the Twitter page.
Content Posts
_________________________________________________________________________________
This was a sketch created to celebrate the final weekend of the Six Nations Rugby Tournemant. I created illustrations based from players such as Castrogiovanni who plays for Italy. I never took these illustrations to screen though as I didn't think it would work as well.
This was another series of sketches I created solely for the social media campaign. Part of my campaign was to re-design a logo of a famous brand just to show different ways of designing to my followers. The brand I went for was Dominos as it is a well known brand and one of the biggest not only in the UK but around the world.
This was some illustrations I created for a friend. He created some characters when he was a lot younger and wanted me to re-design. I decided to include them in my social media campaign as it is using a sketchbook to re-create already existing ideas.
During my campaign, I decided that I wanted to show how I create one of my illustrations. I did this by posting photographs going from a pencil drawing, building that up, going round it in a pen then shading in some sections. Showing my followers how to create an image from basically nothing was what I wanted to achieve.
Logos and Ongoing Outcomes through the Campaign
_________________________________________________________________________________
In this section there are many different projects that I developed throughout the project. These would be my final outcomes for my social media campaign in addition the development for each of these outcomes. Some where ones I created myself however some of them are client projects.
Sublimely Ridiculous
_________________________________________________________________________________
In this project, I was approach by someone on the Drama degree to create a poster for his external project which would be hosted at a local pub known as 'The Railway'. The project was a comedy night that was raising money for depression and other mental illnesses. He came to me with a list of different things he wanted and I was left to my own creative devices to come up with a solution to these problems.
Like all of my illustrations, I began to draw them in my sketchbook going from the notes that my client gave me. My client wanted a character whose head was exploding with several items coming out. After doing this I sent them to my client and he wanted more of the face showing. After this, I redid some face designs then took them into Adobe Illustrator.
After taking my illustrations onto the screen, I began to experiment with different shapes and sizes of the character. This was easier to do on the computer as I could copy and paste some assets to resize them without redrawing the whole character. After trying the colours and outlines out in a variety of different ways. I sent them to my client again for feedback and he liked them.
After solidifying the illustrations for my client, I decided to go back to my sketchbook and layout the content for the poster. I decided on having the character in the centre so that it could be the main focus. Placing the title underneath has also been done to keep focus on it, also placing the content underneath it.
Laura's Hairdressing Logo
_________________________________________________________________________________
From this idea that she wanted I started sketching a lot of different scissor shapes into my sketchbook hoping that one would work enough to bring it onto the screen. In addition to this, I experimented with different lines and types out outlines on the handles of the scissors to differentiate them.
For a project outside of my university set tasks, I had to design a logo for a hairdresser who wanted to set up her own website. She wanted a logo that focused around a pair of scissors and the colour purple.
From this idea that she wanted I started sketching a lot of different scissor shapes into my sketchbook hoping that one would work enough to bring it onto the screen. In addition to this, I experimented with different lines and types out outlines on the handles of the scissors to differentiate them.
After doing this, I began to sketch up some more solid logos with a bit more information. My client wanted a piece of text saying 'EST. 2005' on her logo somewhere. I therefore drew up some more simpler logos to experiment with some text placement.
After sketching up enough logos, I decided to take a few into Adobe Illustrator and development them further. I started out with creating a simple scissor shape then experimenting with different strokes and thicknesses to create the look she wanted. When I went to her with these illustrations I sat down with her and worked with these to create the final logo.
This is not the logo that my client chose for her company however I felt like it had the most potential to be animated through Adobe After Effects. To view this final animation please watch the video on YouTube on the following link...

Heroes Character Designs
_________________________________________________________________________________
After doing this, I then took photographs of them and put them into Adobe Illustrator. Doing this allowed me to go around the outlines and completely recreate them digitally. After doing this, I then added colour to fully realise the designs.
During the time of the campaign, I came across a few different character designs that had been done my other designers in a more simplistic style. I felt like replicating these styles for some of the characters of the TV Series 'Heroes'.
Once again, starting off in my sketchbook, I created some character sketches so that I could understand what each character's main features would be. The key to designing these characters would be to pick these distinctive features out and ensure they are prominent in the design. This would be so that when the characters are shown, they would be instantly recognisable even though they wouldn't have all of the details.
After doing this, I then took photographs of them and put them into Adobe Illustrator. Doing this allowed me to go around the outlines and completely recreate them digitally. After doing this, I then added colour to fully realise the designs.
Sprechen Icon Designs
_________________________________________________________________________________
Another external project that I wanted to document on my campaign was designing some icons for a local digital marketing company Sprechen. I was asked to design some icons that would be used on their new website in addition to other sections.
The six icons that my client wanted where called 'Technology', 'Cloud Services', 'Experiments', 'Websites', 'Content' and 'Digital Marketing'. I started to sketch up some possible ideas in my sketchbook to show to the client and gage an idea about what he was looking for. This process took around an hour or so.
After doing this I continued to sketch up more icon designs trying to stay away from some stereotypes for icons. Also, I would keep referring to my client for what he wanted so that the designs where as close to his brief as possible.
These where the final icons designed for my client. I have included the names underneath each icon so that it is easy to understand. When I showed these to my own client, he enjoyed them and thought that they fur-filled the purpose he wanted. I sent them to him as an .ai file so that he could easily import them into his website and other branding at any size he wanted.
Pixel Artwork Comic
_________________________________________________________________________________
As a personal project this semester, I wanted to look back at my illustrations using pixel art. I decided the best way to do this was to create a short one-page comic that would be drawn in Adobe Photoshop for pixel art. I used Photoshop as it is a bitmap based software therefore the designs would be automatically in pixels anyway.
I started off by designing the comic in my sketchbook to have a basic understanding of what the characters would look like. In addition to this, I added some motion directions in case I wanted to animate the comic with the different layers.
These are some further illustrations showing the boxes of the character in addition to some other assets that would potentially be outside of the box.
This is the final comic strip that I created for this section. I used Adobe Photoshop to create all of the assets. I believe that in doing this i have improved upon the pixel art skills I have had for a long time. There is a clear design theme throughout with the inclusion of the text with the yellow background.
Google Analytics
_________________________________________________________________________________
To determine the success of the campaign, I used Google Analytics to track how many users where coming to my site during the time I was running the campaign. In addition to seeing how many people, I could see what sites they where coming from or whether they where direct.
Here is an overall recap of my website's statistics. These would be over the course of the campaign as I only set up my analytics on the 26th of February. There was a total of 386 page views and 156 unique users. The average was 1.75 pages per session with a bounce rate f 90.96%. This meaning that a majority of users didn't stay for very long. The average length of each session was around 18 seconds further solidifying the fact that the users did not stay long.
When I started my campaign, I created a goal in Google Analytics that would show me the number of sessions on my website. It would also tell me how many sessions would come from a social referral. This means that it would me is any sessions where generated from a link from either os my social media campaigns. From this graph you can see how 0 sessions where created due to my campaign.
In this graph, it shows that I have had 221 different sessions on my websites since my campaign started. A majority come from websites that are just used to raise numbers and are therefore useless to me. However it is shown that I have had 23 direct users meaning they came straight to my site.
This is the overall graph showing activity on my site between February the 26th and March the 29th. As you can see there are spikes in activities but nothing sustainable for the campaign to be considered a success.
Splitting up the information, I decided to focus on the amount of direct sources to my portfolio as the other referrals are not reliable. Out of the 156 new users to my site, the direct viewers counted for 9.62% (15 people) of those new viewers.
Also, each direct view had an average of viewing 8 pages per session and each session worked out as an average of 2:54 (2 minutes and 54 seconds). This shows that a majority of the viewers that came to my site spent a considerable amount of time there as there is only 4 web pages on that specific site. From these statistics I had to conclude that my social media campaign was not successful as there are not specific stats to show that my campaign had a direct effect on the amount of viewers.

Documentation of Campaign
Here are some screenshots documenting my campaign, I had two accounts going simultaneously. One was on Twitter and the other was on Instagram.

Evaluation of Campaign Results
_________________________________________________________________________________
Overall, I cannot say that my social media campaign was successful. This is because I cannot find any facts in my Google Analytics that show that my campaign had a direct effect on the people that went to my site. On each of my accounts, there was a low interaction rate of people retweeting, commenting or contacting me about my work. Neither of the campaigns reached their goals of obtaining 50 followers within the 5 weeks.
There was many things that did not go to plan in my campaign which lead to it’s ineffectiveness. The first of this was that I never mentioned my website enough. Meaning that viewers of my campaigns never had the place to go. I included the link to my portfolio site in the descriptions however I never mentioned them in my posts. Another problems was that the posting of my content was extremely irregular and unstructured. This was most noticeable on my Instagram campaign as I wanted to post at least once a day. However at times I went a few days without posting then I would post about 3 in one day. I believe that having more than one social medium to worry about also caused an effect on the outcome. By the end of the campaign I focused on Instagram however just using Twitter to link people to it instead. Planning out the content was something that I did in the beginning however I never stuck to that plan. This was one of the main factors of this campaign as I should have stuck to that plan.
Through this, I have learned that maintaining a social media campaign is extremely difficult if you do not stick to the plan. In addition to this, I have learned that consistency is key to the campaign, having content regularly uploaded so that your followers do not drop off. Maybe using just one social medium would have been the best way to keep a regular flow of content in addition to using something like Tweetdeck rather than manually uploading tweets/posts. Another method of improving the campaign would be to create a majority of the content before starting the campaign instead of trying to come up with content beforehand.
What I can take forward from this campaign would be that I will still use my Instagram to post work and may do another campaign in the future. This is because out of the two campaigns I ran, this one had the most interactions even though it was the one with the least followers. I learned that the people I should have been aiming at where on Instagram rather than Twitter. In addition to this, I will transfer the tweets I was making about industry-related subjects I will carry over to my personal Twitter account. I would also on both accounts interact with other designers more. This is so that I could become better at networking though the social mediums I have chosen.
